BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is heading toward a record-breaking year for wind energy capacity additions, having added 8.8 gigawatts (GW) in the first half of 2026. This marks a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. As per the latest industry data from WindEurope, the turbines brought online so far can generate enough electricity to power around 7 million European households and help displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The surge in installation activity during the summer months is accelerating Europe’s energy transition, contributing to the projected record year in wind power deployment.

Germany led regional expansion during the first half of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW—roughly 40% of all new wind capacity added across Europe. Over 500 wind turbines were installed within Germany, including 423 onshore units and 84 offshore turbines. Other European countries such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported significant capacity growth. Ukraine notably added over 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict, while Belgium brought an additional 60 MW online to its national grid.
WindEurope’s Autumn Report projects that total wind capacity added in Europe will reach 24 GW by the end of 2026, setting a new record for yearly installations. This growth is expected to serve as a critical stepping stone toward the broader goal of achieving 30 GW annually in the 2030s. Investment in new European wind farms hit 9 billion euros in the first half of this year. Furthermore, national governments awarded over 17 GW of capacity through competitive auctions, with an additional 26 GW scheduled for tendering before the year ends.
Germany Extends Its Lead with Over Three Gigawatts of New Wind Capacity
While the installation figures are robust, industry representatives caution that ongoing structural bottlenecks remain a threat to sustained growth. Germany, for instance, permitted the deployment of over 9 GW of onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, demonstrating rapid progress. However, permitting volumes have decreased in several key markets, including Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Industry leaders emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines, despite Europe’s overall positive outlook.
In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten noted that 2026 could set a new record for wind installations but warned that maintaining momentum depends on future policy decisions. She stressed that government actions concerning permitting procedures, auction designs, grid infrastructure upgrades, and industrial electrification will be decisive in sustaining the sector’s current pace of growth.
Onshore Turbines Constitute the Majority of New Capacity Installations
To keep up the current expansion rate, WindEurope outlined five essential policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include implementing streamlined permitting rules, expanding regional transmission infrastructure, channeling Emissions Trading System revenues into industrial electrification, and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, the total installed wind capacity in Europe could reach 436 GW by 2030, providing 27% of the EU’s total electricity needs.
