The primary goal of the satellite is to identify and analyze disruptions affecting global navigation satellite systems like GPS and Galileo. Austrian-developed technologies form the core of the satellite’s systems
Several European firms contribute essential components to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides high-precision technology designed for GNSS interference detection and analysis. Danish company Space Inventor supplies additional satellite hardware, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems specifically developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice, providing approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency is actively involved, supporting and co-financing the mission via its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. This program enables commercial space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite program. The military space strategy adopted in 2023 envisions the Austrian Armed Forces evolving from solely utilizing space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains firm, with a Falcon 9 scheduled to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. Once in space, the satellite will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research efforts.
